Melissa York and Lake Lloyd

Melissa and Lake met 10 years ago in Olympia, Washington. Melissa was drumming for the lesbionic rock band Team Dresch and Lake had recently completed her Liberal Arts degree at The Evergreen State College. They should have known it was meant to be when they met each other’s alter egos: Lake as racecar driver Shirley Muldowney and Melissa as “Jim”, a perverted drunk clown who had a tendency to behave inappropriately. That encounter must have been what drew them together. They developed a relationship and Lake moved to New York to be with Melissa. They have created art in various forms, separately and together, over the past 10 years.

Their Holiday Greeting Cards started off as a play on the “Family” greeting cards that you typically see on people’s fridge. The ones that make you ask yourself “They know those people?” “Look at those outfits!” Melissa and Lake decided they wanted the world to see their “Family”. They couldn't resist the temptation to dress up as other people, thus adding yet another twist to their special portrait. What started out as a silly one-time project has turned into a yearly tradition, with an ever-increasing mailing list.

They have since relocated to Durham, North Carolina so that Melissa could form the band the Butchies, and Lake could have a big back yard.
They continue their quest for new alter-egos and super cheesy themes for their Holiday Cards.
(*Melissa is now drumming fulltime for the Durham band Gerty!.)
