Taking their name in honor of Gertrude Stein, the first
woman to be
accepted into Johns Hopkins University, GERTY! was originally formed in
Baltimore by riot grrl Shirlé Hale (ex-Womyn of Destruction), David
Koslowski (ex-Liquor Bike) & Miyuki Furtado (currently in The Rogers
Sisters). The trio quickly snagged a record deal with Merkin Records
and released an EP & full-length CD in 1996.
By 1998, Shirlé and David decided to move to Chapel Hill, NC and
then
Durham, NC while Miyuki followed his love to Brooklyn where he would
join the Rogers Sisters. Shirlé and David being the nucleus of
the
group have continued writing and releasing "Two Kisses In A Row"
(Plastique Recording Co.) and the Chris Stamey produced "Sweets from
the Minibar" (Eskimo Kiss Records).
The duo has just been joined by Melissa York (formally of The
Butchies, Team Dresch, Vitapup) on the drums. Melissa provides a
hard-hitting groove that accentuates the group's hook-infested
Electro-New-Wave sound. When GERTY! performs a dance party is sure to
errupt.
They are currently working on brand new CD called "Dance the Swivel
Hips."
